Faith leaders unite at Queens Park against violence against women: NDP

Published Posted on by | By TZTA News
May 10, 2013; QUEEN’S PARK — Parkdale–High Park NDP MPP Cheri DiNovo invited faith leaders from various communities to Queen’s Park this afternoon, just days before Mother’s Day, to bring attention to the issue of violence against women.

The gathering is an initiative of Ruth’s Daughters of Canada, a non-profit organization that DiNovo launched in 2010 at Queen’s Park with the support of all three political parties.

The event was attended by leaders of major faith communities – Santbir Singh from the Sikh community, Bishop Patrick Yu from the Anglican Diocese, Geshe Nawang Choejoer from the Tibetan Buddhist community, Rabbi Tina Grimberg from the Congregation Darchei Noam, Fredelle Brief from the Canadian Jewish Congress and Raheel Raza, Muslim interfaith advocate and journalist, were present among others.

A declaration reading, “We the faith leaders in our respective faith communities stand committed to promoting freedom from violence for all women,” was signed by all the faith leaders.

The group takes its name from the Book of Ruth, the Old Testament story of a woman and her daughter-in-law, from different faiths, who cared for each other.
